How do I extract the audio from my AVI file as FLAC?

Does converting AVI to FLAC improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The AVI already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless FLAC preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
Can I tag the FLAC with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over AVI, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. FLAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
What audio bitrate does the extracted FLAC use?

A lossy FLAC is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless FLAC (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Will I lose audio quality going from AVI to FLAC?

If FLAC is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If FLAC is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the FLAC codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded. FLAC uses linear prediction plus Rice coding to reach roughly 50-60% of the original size while decoding back to bit-identical PCM.

Why does the FLAC file have silent gaps where the AVI had sound?

Usually the AVI carries more than one audio track and the one that was converted is silent or secondary. The converter picks one audio track automatically, normally the main one, and this page has no setting to choose a different track. If the wrong one comes out, remux the AVI with the track you want first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
