How do I extract the audio from my AVI file as MP3?

Is converting AVI to MP3 a second round of lossy compression?

Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. AVI files predate modern codecs: expect MPEG-4 Part 2 (DivX/Xvid), Motion JPEG or raw uncompressed frames rather than H.264. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Can I tag the MP3 with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over AVI, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
Will a very large AVI file upload successfully?

Free accounts cap at 100 MB per file, and AVI sources run large because the format carries substantial per-chunk overhead on top of the video data. Premium lifts the cap considerably. If the file is split into numbered parts because of the format ceiling, upload them together and they are treated as one job. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
What audio bitrate does the extracted MP3 use?

Default bitrate for lossy MP3 is 192 kbps, which is transparent for music. You can override to 320 kbps (audiophile) or 96-128 kbps (voice / podcast / smaller file). The bitrate dropdown is exposed in the advanced options before you click convert.
Will I lose audio quality going from AVI to MP3?

If MP3 is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the MP3 codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the MP3 audio keep the original sample rate?
