How do I extract frames from an AVI video as BMP images?

Upload the AVI and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one BMP from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a BMP image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. AVI is Microsoft’s Audio Video Interleave, introduced in 1992 on top of the RIFF chunk format — one of the oldest containers still in circulation. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Can I get the BMP frames without the subtitles?

Only if the AVI never had them burned in, because AVI has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an AVI shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every BMP the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
How big will the BMP files be?

Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
At what resolution does each extracted BMP frame come out?

The same resolution as the AVI video — a 1080p AVI produces 1920×1080 BMP frames; a 4K AVI produces 3840×2160 BMP frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Can I extract every single frame from AVI as BMP?

Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 BMP images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the extracted BMP images preserve the AVI color grading?

HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the AVI as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR AVI can look flat or washed out as a BMP. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
What is the file size of one extracted BMP frame?

Depends on resolution and BMP codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p AVI produces ~50 GB total.
How long does frame extraction from AVI to BMP take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Can I extract frames at specific timestamps in the AVI?

One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a BMP. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my AVI video private during frame extraction?

Yes. Uploaded AVI files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted BMP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted BMP frames blurry?

Almost always motion blur baked into the AVI source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.
