For lossless SVG (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy SVG (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. The image data is ordinary JPEG; JFIF just defines the density and thumbnail fields around it, so a .jfif and a .jpg are the same picture. An SVG stores shapes as mathematical paths and text as text, not as pixels, so it is a document rather than a raster grid.
Only up to a point, and it is worth setting expectations first. Tracing turns pixel regions into paths, which works well for logos, line art and flat-colour graphics with clear boundaries. A photograph has no such boundaries, so the trace yields either a crude posterised approximation or an SVG with tens of thousands of paths that is larger and slower to render than the original. SVG cannot represent a photograph — tracing one produces either a crude approximation or a file larger than the original raster.
The SVG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JFIF has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel SVG provides has something to store. SVG renders perfectly at any size, stays editable, is searchable and diffable as plain text, and is usually a fraction of the size of an equivalent PNG.
No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JFIF are ordinary pixel data now, and SVG preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. The .jfif extension confuses Windows and many web apps into refusing the file, which is usually the only reason anyone converts it.
By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. JFIF is the JPEG File Interchange Format — the header specification that makes a raw JPEG bitstream into a portable file.
In an SVG, text is real text — selectable, searchable and re-styleable, and it needs the font to be available or embedded to render as intended. Converting away from SVG turns that text into pixels or into document text depending on the target; converting towards SVG only produces real text if the source had a text layer to begin with.
Transparency survives when SVG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware SVG instead of SVG=JPG. SVG is the W3C’s XML-based vector format, a recommendation since 2001 and now native to every browser.
Embedded ICC color profiles are read from JFIF and re-attached to the SVG output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB, which keeps colors consistent across most modern displays.
