JFIF to BMP Conversion FAQ
How do I convert JFIF to BMP without losing image quality?
+
Upload your JFIF file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for BMP. For lossless BMP (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy BMP (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. The image data is ordinary JPEG; JFIF just defines the density and thumbnail fields around it, so a .jfif and a .jpg are the same picture. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
Does converting JFIF to BMP restore the quality that was lost?
+
No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JFIF are ordinary pixel data now, and BMP preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. BMP needs no decoder library at all, so it remains the safe interchange format for embedded systems and legacy Windows tooling. The .jfif extension confuses Windows and many web apps into refusing the file, which is usually the only reason anyone converts it.
Does JFIF to BMP conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when BMP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware BMP instead of BMP=JPG. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
What about EXIF metadata when converting JFIF to BMP?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the BMP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert many JFIF files to BMP at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
What resolution will my BMP file have?
+
Default is 1:1 — your BMP keeps the pixel dimensions of the source JFIF. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Are my JFIF files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded JFIF files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted BMP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted BMP bigger or smaller than I expected?
+
A JFIF with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless BMP (PNG, TIFF). A lossless JFIF often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format.
