How do I convert BMP to JFIF without losing image quality?

How much quality will I lose going from BMP to JFIF?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JFIF repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the BMP as the master and regenerate the JFIF from it whenever you need a new size. BMP needs no decoder library at all, so it remains the safe interchange format for embedded systems and legacy Windows tooling.
Does BMP to JFIF conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when JFIF is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware JFIF instead of JFIF=JPG. JFIF is the JPEG File Interchange Format — the header specification that makes a raw JPEG bitstream into a portable file.
What about EXIF metadata when converting BMP to JFIF?

Why is my converted JFIF bigger or smaller than I expected?

A BMP with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless JFIF (PNG, TIFF). A lossless BMP often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format. The .jfif extension confuses Windows and many web apps into refusing the file, which is usually the only reason anyone converts it.
