JPEG to JFIF Conversion FAQ

How do I convert JPEG to JFIF without losing image quality?
+
Upload your JPEG file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for JFIF. For lossless JFIF (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy JFIF (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header. The image data is ordinary JPEG; JFIF just defines the density and thumbnail fields around it, so a .jfif and a .jpg are the same picture.
It is converted to sRGB, because JFIF has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original JPEG rather than the JFIF. The .jfif extension confuses Windows and many web apps into refusing the file, which is usually the only reason anyone converts it.
Transparency survives when JFIF is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware JFIF instead of JFIF=JPG. JFIF is the JPEG File Interchange Format — the header specification that makes a raw JPEG bitstream into a portable file.
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the JFIF. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Default is 1:1 — your JFIF keeps the pixel dimensions of the source JPEG. If you need to resize as part of the conversion, use /resize-image/ after conversion, or chain it with the /image-resize/ utility.
Yes. Uploaded JPEG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JFIF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
A JPEG with strong existing compression (lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded to lossless JFIF (PNG, TIFF). A lossless JPEG often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG / WebP. The ratio depends on image content — photos compress differently from line art. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.

JPEG

JPEG uses lossy compression optimized for photographs, balancing resolution and file size.

JFIF

JFIF is the interchange wrapper around baseline JPEG data, so a JFIF file is a JPEG under a different extension.
