Is the older binary Office format still a safe bet?

The binary formats predate the XML packages, carry macro payloads that many mail servers strip on sight, and are being steadily deprecated by Microsoft itself. Use them when a specific piece of old software demands them, and the XML format otherwise. PPTX animations, transitions and embedded fonts are the first things to break when it is opened outside PowerPoint.
What happens to slide animations and transitions?

They are not carried across, because build timing has no representation outside a presentation format. Each slide becomes a static page showing its final state, so anything that was revealed progressively appears all at once. Speaker notes are preserved separately wherever the target has a field for them.
