How do I extract frames from an MPG video as JPEG images?

Upload the MPG and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPEG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPEG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. MPG is the same MPEG program stream as .mpeg — the three-letter extension is a DOS-era truncation, not a different format. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
Can I get the JPEG frames without the subtitles?

Only if the MPG never had them burned in, because MPG has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an MPG shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every JPEG the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. MPG inherits every MPEG-2 limitation — heavy bitrate, interlacing, no soft subtitles — plus the confusion of two extensions for one format.
At what resolution does each extracted JPEG frame come out?

The same resolution as the MPG video — a 1080p MPG produces 1920×1080 JPEG frames; a 4K MPG produces 3840×2160 JPEG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Can I extract every single frame from MPG as JPEG?

Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 JPEG images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the extracted JPEG images preserve the MPG color grading?

HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the MPG as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR MPG can look flat or washed out as a JPEG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
What is the file size of one extracted JPEG frame?

Depends on resolution and JPEG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p MPG produces ~50 GB total. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
How long does frame extraction from MPG to JPEG take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Can I extract frames at specific timestamps in the MPG?

One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a JPEG. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my MPG video private during frame extraction?

Yes. Uploaded MPG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPEG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted JPEG frames blurry?

Almost always motion blur baked into the MPG source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.
Can I extract one JPEG per scene change rather than per timestamp?

No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.
