How do I extract the audio from my MOV file as M4R?

Upload the MOV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream, then transcodes it to M4R. There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. MOV is Apple’s QuickTime container, shipped in 1991 and still the format an iPhone, iPad or Final Cut Pro timeline writes by default. M4R is an iPhone ringtone — an ordinary AAC file in an MP4 container with the extension changed so iTunes files it as a tone.
Is converting MOV to M4R a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the M4R encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the M4R from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. A MOV normally carries H.264 or HEVC for delivery, or ProRes when it is an editing master, alongside AAC or uncompressed PCM audio. The payload is AAC, conventionally capped at 40 seconds, which is the longest tone iOS will accept.
Can I tag the M4R with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MOV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. M4R carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. M4R drops straight into the iOS Sounds list via Finder or iTunes with no further processing.
What audio bitrate does the extracted M4R use?

A lossy M4R is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless M4R (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Will I lose audio quality going from MOV to M4R?

If M4R is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If M4R is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the M4R codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Can I extract audio from multiple MOV files to M4R in one batch?

Why does the M4R file have silent gaps where the MOV had sound?

Usually the MOV carries more than one audio track and the one that was converted is silent or secondary. The converter picks one audio track automatically, normally the main one, and this page has no setting to choose a different track. If the wrong one comes out, remux the MOV with the track you want first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
