How do I extract frames from an AVI video as JPEG images?

Upload the AVI and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is encoded as an individual JPEG file and the full set is bundled into a ZIP archive for download. AVI is Microsoft’s Audio Video Interleave, introduced in 1992 on top of the RIFF chunk format — one of the oldest containers still in circulation. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
Why do my extracted frames have horizontal lines through them?

Because the source is interlaced. AVI content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Can I get the JPEG frames without the subtitles?

Only if the AVI never had them burned in, because AVI has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an AVI shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every JPEG the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
What quality setting should I use for the JPEG output?

Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one used unless you change it — visually indistinguishable from the source at normal viewing distance, at roughly a fifth of the size of a lossless equivalent. Push to 95 for anything that will be edited or printed, and drop to 70 for thumbnails where size dominates. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
Will a very large AVI file upload successfully?

Free accounts cap at 100 MB per file, and AVI sources run large because the format carries substantial per-chunk overhead on top of the video data. Premium lifts the cap considerably. If the file is split into numbered parts because of the format ceiling, upload them together and they are treated as one job.

Does the extracted JPEG retain EXIF camera metadata?

The AVI container does not store per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the JPEG files come out with empty EXIF. We embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp so you can re-sort the bundle by capture order.
How long does frame extraction from AVI to JPEG take?
