VOB to JPEG Conversion FAQ

How do I extract frames from a VOB video as JPEG images?
+
Upload the VOB and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPEG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPEG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
Not if they are a real subtitle track. A VOB keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a JPEG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became a VOB are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
The same resolution as the VOB video — a 1080p VOB produces 1920×1080 JPEG frames; a 4K VOB produces 3840×2160 JPEG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 JPEG images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the VOB as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR VOB can look flat or washed out as a JPEG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
Depends on resolution and JPEG codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p VOB produces ~50 GB total. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a JPEG. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Yes. Uploaded VOB files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPEG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur baked into the VOB source — the camera or subject was moving when the frame was captured. Pick timestamps from static scenes, or extract adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that was not there.
No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.

VOB

VOB (Video Object) is a container format used for DVD video. It can contain video, audio, subtitles, and menus for DVD playback.

JPEG

JPEG uses lossy compression optimized for photographs, balancing resolution and file size.
