How do I extract the audio from my MPG file as MP3?

Upload the MPG file and the converter demuxes the audio stream, then transcodes it to MP3. There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. MPG is the same MPEG program stream as .mpeg — the three-letter extension is a DOS-era truncation, not a different format. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Is converting MPG to MP3 a second round of lossy compression?

Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. Contents are MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio; the muxing and the GOP structure are identical to a .mpeg file. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Can I tag the MP3 with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MPG, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
What happens to multichannel audio when converting MPG to MP3?

It is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
What audio bitrate does the extracted MP3 use?

Will I lose audio quality going from MPG to MP3?

If MP3 is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the MP3 codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded.
Does the MP3 audio keep the original sample rate?
