What bitrate will the resulting MP2 file use?

A lossy MP2 is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless MP2 (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Is converting MP3 to MP2 a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the MP2 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP2 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps. MP2 is lossy but uses a simpler filterbank than MP3, typically running at 192 to 384 kbps.
Will my track titles and album art survive the MP3 to MP2 conversion?

Not intact. MP3 carries a proper metadata block, but MP2 has no standard place for artist, album, track number or cover art, so tags are dropped rather than mangled. Keep the MP3 as the tagged copy, or re-tag afterwards with a tool like Mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard. MP2 needs far more bitrate than MP3 or AAC for the same quality and is unknown to most consumer software.
Will going from MP3 to MP2 reduce my audio quality?

If MP3 is lossy and MP2 is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the MP2 is no better than the MP3 — you cannot recover information already discarded. If MP3 is lossless and MP2 is lossy, the MP2 codec recompresses; at 192 kbps the result is transparent for most content.
Can I batch convert hundreds of MP3 files to MP2?

Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Will the MP2 keep the same sample rate as MP3?

By default yes — 48 kHz MP3 stays 48 kHz in MP2. If you need to downsample for compatibility (96 kHz → 44.1 kHz for CD burning), the sample-rate option applies high-quality resampling in the same encode pass.
Can I normalize loudness when converting MP3 to MP2?

Not in this step. The converter has no loudness setting and leaves the level as it is. To even out the volume, run the finished MP2 through a Normalize tool on this site.
Will my MP2 play on car stereo, iPod, and Sonos?

MP3 plays almost everywhere. AAC plays on Apple devices, most Android phones and Sonos. FLAC plays on Sonos and Android but not on older iPods, and WAV plays on nearly everything but makes large files. There are no device presets on this page, so choose the target format your player supports. MP2 is extremely robust to bit errors and cheap to decode, which is why broadcast chains stayed on it long after MP3 arrived.
Is my MP3 file private during conversion to MP2?

Yes. Uploaded MP3 files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted MP2 are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
How long does converting a 1-hour MP3 to MP2 take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
