How do I extract the audio from my MP4 file as FLAC?

Upload the MP4 file and the converter demuxes the audio stream, then transcodes it to FLAC. There is no second video pass — the visual track is discarded immediately so extraction is much faster than a full re-encode. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. FLAC is the Free Lossless Audio Codec, an open format from 2001 that compresses without discarding a single sample.
Does converting MP4 to FLAC improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The MP4 already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless FLAC preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. MP4 only supports one widely-honoured subtitle format (mov_text), and multi-track audio is unreliable outside desktop players.
Can I tag the FLAC with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MP4, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. FLAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
Will the FLAC play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. MP4 is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; FLAC needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on MP4. FLAC is still several times larger than a good lossy file, and Apple’s ecosystem only added support recently and grudgingly.
What audio bitrate does the extracted FLAC use?

A lossy FLAC is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless FLAC (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Will I lose audio quality going from MP4 to FLAC?

If FLAC is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If FLAC is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the FLAC codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded. FLAC uses linear prediction plus Rice coding to reach roughly 50-60% of the original size while decoding back to bit-identical PCM.
Can I extract audio from multiple MP4 files to FLAC in one batch?

Not in this tool directly — extract the full audio as FLAC, then use /audio-trim/ or /audio-cutter/ to clip the section. The two-step path is usually faster than a combined operation and gives you precise waveform-level control.
Is my MP4 file private during the audio extraction?
