How do I extract frames from an MP4 video as PNG images?

Upload the MP4 and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is encoded as an individual PNG file and the full set is bundled into a ZIP archive for download. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format.
Will subtitles show up in the PNG frames I extract?

Not if they are a real subtitle track. An MP4 keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a PNG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an MP4 are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Does the PNG output support transparency?

The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
How big will the PNG files be?

Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
At what resolution does each extracted PNG frame come out?

The same resolution as the MP4 video — a 1080p MP4 produces 1920×1080 PNG frames; a 4K MP4 produces 3840×2160 PNG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Can I extract every single frame from MP4 as PNG?

Yes, but be careful with file count — a 30fps 1-minute MP4 produces 1,800 PNG frames. We pack them into a ZIP automatically. For longer clips, the "1 per second" option (60 frames) or specific timestamps gives a manageable result.
Will the extracted PNG images preserve the MP4 color grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the matrix the source MP4 uses (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR on extraction to PNG because most PNG formats (PNG, JPG) cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively.

Does the extracted PNG retain EXIF camera metadata?

The MP4 container does not store per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the PNG files come out with empty EXIF. We embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp so you can re-sort the bundle by capture order.
How long does frame extraction from MP4 to PNG take?
