How do I extract the audio from my MOV file as FLAC?

Does converting MOV to FLAC improve the audio quality?

The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. MOV files are large, and outside the Apple ecosystem playback support is patchier than MP4 — older Android builds and some Smart TVs will refuse them.
Can I tag the FLAC with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MOV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. FLAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
Will the FLAC play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. MOV is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; FLAC needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on MOV. FLAC is still several times larger than a good lossy file, and Apple’s ecosystem only added support recently and grudgingly.
What audio bitrate does the extracted FLAC use?

A lossy FLAC is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless FLAC (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Will I lose audio quality going from MOV to FLAC?

If FLAC is lossless (WAV, FLAC), every sample is preserved exactly. If FLAC is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the FLAC codec recompresses the source audio — at 192 kbps the result is transparent for almost all content. Going lossy → lossless never recovers detail already discarded. FLAC uses linear prediction plus Rice coding to reach roughly 50-60% of the original size while decoding back to bit-identical PCM.
