Upload your JPG file and the converter applies format-aware quality optimization for WebP. For lossless WebP (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved; for lossy WebP (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor before download. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
The WebP format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel WebP provides has something to store. WebP is typically 25-35% smaller than an equivalent JPG and far smaller than an animated GIF, with universal browser support since 2020.
It is converted to sRGB, because WebP has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original JPG rather than the WebP. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.
By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Transparency survives when WebP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background. If you need transparency in the result, target a transparency-aware WebP instead of WebP=JPG. WebP is Google’s 2010 image format, built from the VP8 keyframe encoder and intended to replace JPG, PNG and GIF at once.
Embedded ICC color profiles are read from JPG and re-attached to the WebP output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB, which keeps colors consistent across most modern displays.
Camera EXIF (ISO, shutter, lens, GPS coords) is preserved by default during JPG → WebP when both formats support metadata. Use the privacy option to strip metadata before download if you need to share images without geolocation.
