How do I extract frames from an AV1 video as BMP images?

Upload the AV1 and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is encoded as an individual BMP file and the full set is bundled into a ZIP archive for download. AV1 is the royalty-free video codec the Alliance for Open Media released in 2018 as the successor to VP9. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.

Will subtitles show up in the BMP frames I extract?

Not if they are a real subtitle track. An AV1 keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a BMP has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an AV1 are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.

Can I pull one BMP out of each chapter of the AV1?

Not as a single button, but the AV1 makes it straightforward: chapter marks are stored in the container as named timestamps, so read the chapter list off the file and paste those times into the timestamp field. You get one BMP per chapter, in order, which is the usual way of building thumbnails for a long recording. Sources with no chapter marks leave you picking scenes by eye instead. AV1 delivers roughly 30% better compression than H.264 at the same quality and carries no licence fees, which is why YouTube and Netflix push it.

How big will the BMP files be?

Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.

At what resolution does each extracted BMP frame come out?

The same resolution as the AV1 video — a 1080p AV1 produces 1920×1080 BMP frames; a 4K AV1 produces 3840×2160 BMP frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.

Can I extract every single frame from AV1 as BMP?

Yes, but be careful with file count — a 30fps 1-minute AV1 produces 1,800 BMP frames. We pack them into a ZIP automatically. For longer clips, the "1 per second" option (60 frames) or specific timestamps gives a manageable result.

Will the extracted BMP images preserve the AV1 color grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the matrix the source AV1 uses (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR on extraction to BMP because most BMP formats (PNG, JPG) cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively.

What is the file size of one extracted BMP frame?

Depends on resolution and BMP codec. A 1080p PNG frame is typically 2 to 5 MB; a 1080p JPG at quality-85 is 200 to 500 KB; a 4K PNG is 6 to 15 MB. At the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p AV1 produces ~50 GB total.

Does the extracted BMP retain EXIF camera metadata?

The AV1 container does not store per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the BMP files come out with empty EXIF. We embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp so you can re-sort the bundle by capture order.

How long does frame extraction from AV1 to BMP take?

Frame extraction is fast — typically 20 to 30% of source duration on the standard pipeline. A 5-minute AV1 → BMP bundle finishes in about a minute regardless of frame count, because the bottleneck is the BMP encoder, not the AV1 demuxer.

Can I extract frames at specific timestamps in the AV1?
