How do I extract frames from a WMV video as PNG images?

Upload the WMV and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is encoded as an individual PNG file and the full set is bundled into a ZIP archive for download. WMV is Windows Media Video, Microsoft’s ASF-based format from the Windows XP era. Why do my extracted frames have horizontal lines through them?

Because the source is interlaced. WMV content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Can I get the PNG frames without the subtitles?

Only if the WMV never had them burned in, because WMV has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything a WMV shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every PNG the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
Does the PNG output support transparency?

The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
How big will the PNG files be?

Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
At what resolution does each extracted PNG frame come out?

The same resolution as the WMV video — a 1080p WMV produces 1920×1080 PNG frames; a 4K WMV produces 3840×2160 PNG frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.
Can I extract every single frame from WMV as PNG?

Yes, but be careful with file count — a 30fps 1-minute WMV produces 1,800 PNG frames. We pack them into a ZIP automatically. For longer clips, the "1 per second" option (60 frames) or specific timestamps gives a manageable result.
Will the extracted PNG images preserve the WMV color grading?

Does the extracted PNG retain EXIF camera metadata?
