WMA to OGG Conversion FAQ

How do I convert WMA audio to OGG without losing quality?
+
Upload the WMA file and the converter chooses the OGG codec and bitrate to match the source. Lossless OGG (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample bit-identically; lossy OGG (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for most ears. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered. Vorbis inside OGG is lossy and uses variable bitrate by default, so quality is set as a level rather than a fixed kbps figure.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the OGG encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the OGG from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
DRM. A subset of WMA files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. WMA is unsupported almost everywhere outside Windows, and older WMA files may carry DRM that blocks conversion entirely.
Default is 192 kbps for lossy OGG; pass-through for lossless OGG. Override to 320 kbps for audiophile or 96 kbps for voice / podcast. The choice trades file size against audible fidelity; below 96 kbps lossy artifacts become noticeable on music.
If WMA is lossy and OGG is lossless (e.g. MP3 → WAV), the OGG is no better than the WMA — you cannot recover information already discarded. If WMA is lossless and OGG is lossy, the OGG codec recompresses; at 192 kbps the result is transparent for most content.
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, and album art are read from the WMA container and written into the OGG container where the format supports tags. All common targets (MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG) handle tags fine; raw WAV does not. OGG is the Xiph.Org container, usually holding Vorbis audio, created in 2000 as a patent-free alternative to MP3.
Yes — drop a folder of WMA files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes.
By default yes — 48 kHz WMA stays 48 kHz in OGG. If you need to downsample for compatibility (96 kHz → 44.1 kHz for CD burning), the sample-rate option applies high-quality resampling in the same encode pass.
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the OGG, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard). Useful when batching tracks mastered at varying levels.
MP3 plays everywhere. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, and Sonos. FLAC plays on Sonos and Android but not on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but is huge. The advanced device-preset dropdown picks an OGG codec optimized for your target hardware. OGG Vorbis beats MP3 at equal bitrate and carries no licensing cost, which is why game engines and open-source software adopted it wholesale. OGG has poor hardware support — car stereos, older iPods and many TVs will not see the file at all.
Yes — uploaded WMA files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never play back, store long-term, or share the audio content. The full retention window is in /privacy/.
Same-codec re-mux: 10 to 30 seconds. Re-encode to a different codec: typically 10 to 20% of source duration, so a 1-hour WMA → OGG finishes in 6 to 12 minutes. Batch jobs parallelize across workers for further speedups.

WMA

WMA (Windows Media Audio) is an audio compression format developed by Microsoft. It is commonly used for streaming and online music services.

OGG

OGG Vorbis gives superior audio compression comparable to MP3 but completely free and open-source.
