How do I extract frames from an MPEG video as BMP images?

Upload the MPEG and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is encoded as an individual BMP file and the full set is bundled into a ZIP archive for download. MPEG here means an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream, the format standardised for Video CD and then for DVD and broadcast television. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Because the source is interlaced. MPEG content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Only if the MPEG never had them burned in, because MPEG has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an MPEG shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every BMP the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. MPEG-2 needs roughly four to six times the bitrate of H.264 for the same picture, and its content is frequently interlaced, which looks combed on modern displays.
Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
The same resolution as the MPEG video — a 1080p MPEG produces 1920×1080 BMP frames; a 4K MPEG produces 3840×2160 BMP frames. Use the resize utility after extraction if you want smaller thumbnails or social-media-sized crops.

The MPEG container does not store per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the BMP files come out with empty EXIF. We embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp so you can re-sort the bundle by capture order.
Frame extraction is fast — typically 20 to 30% of source duration on the standard pipeline. A 5-minute MPEG → BMP bundle finishes in about a minute regardless of frame count, because the bottleneck is the BMP encoder, not the MPEG demuxer.
