MOBI to DOC Conversion FAQ

How do I convert a MOBI file to DOC?
+
Upload your MOBI file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the MOBI → DOC pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account needed for one-off conversions. MOBI is the Mobipocket format Amazon bought in 2005 and used as the original Kindle format. DOC is the binary Microsoft Word format used from Word 97 through Word 2003.
Yes — that is the point of converting out of MOBI. The output opens as a real document with live paragraphs, styles and tables rather than a frozen page image, so you can edit it directly instead of retyping. Heavily designed source layouts convert less cleanly than plain prose, so expect to tidy spacing on anything built on a complex grid. DOC is still the format a great many corporate templates, legal precedents and government forms are stored in.
Yes where both formats can express them. Cover art, chapter divisions and a navigable table of contents are structural metadata, so they carry across rather than being flattened into the text. Footnotes and index entries are the fragile parts — they degrade into inline text on targets with no anchor mechanism.
It opens everywhere, but it is a compatibility choice rather than a good one. The binary formats predate the XML packages, carry macro payloads that many mail servers strip on sight, and are being steadily deprecated by Microsoft itself. Use them when a specific piece of old software demands them, and the XML format otherwise. DOC is undocumented in practice, opaque to modern tooling, and Microsoft itself has been trying to retire it since 2007.
DRM, in almost every case. A protected MOBI is encrypted and tied to an account, and no converter can decrypt it — ours included. Files you created yourself, or bought from a DRM-free store, convert without any trouble at all. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI for new publishing in 2022, and the format cannot express modern CSS, embedded fonts or fixed layout.
Yes — basic MOBI → DOC conversion is free with no registration required. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, longer retention, and removes ads.
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per MOBI file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file depending on the source type. Very large files are split into chunks server-side when the DOC format allows.
Conversion preserves all information that both MOBI and DOC can represent. Format-specific features the DOC cannot represent (e.g. vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output) are rasterized or stripped — the result page lists what changed. A MOBI wraps PalmDOC-compressed HTML with Amazon’s indexing extensions bolted on top. A DOC is an OLE compound-file structure, with the document body, formatting and any embedded objects stored as binary streams.
Yes — drop multiple MOBI files into the upload zone and they are queued in parallel. Premium runs more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end.
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses standard `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependency — so even older browsers work to upload a MOBI and download the DOC.
Yes — uploaded MOBI files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. The retention window is at /privacy/. MOBI is readable by every Kindle ever made, including the earliest hardware that never learned any newer format.

MOBI

MOBI is the older Kindle format, still readable on Amazon devices but superseded by AZW3 for layout control.
